We know protein is important – for your strength, recovery, appetite and overall wellbeing. But did you know timing your protein intake makes a meaningful difference to how your body feels and performs?  

If you’re someone who moves regularly — lifting, Pilates, running, or just living a busy, active life — understanding protein timing can help you feel stronger, more energised, and better supported daytoday. It doesn’t require tracking every gram or eating on a strict schedule. Just a few smart habits. 

Why timing matters more than you think 

Your body uses protein to repair and rebuild muscle through a process called muscle protein synthesis (MPS), a process activated by a meal containing enough of the amino acid leucine. Your body can only use so much protein at once for MPS. So, rather than saving protein for one large dinner, aim for 20–40 g at three to four meals across the day. This gives your muscles repeated signals to repair and helps keep your appetite and energy steadier between meals. 

This helps you: 

  • trigger MPS multiple times
  • recover better and faster between sessions
  • keep blood sugar steadier
  • reduce cravings
  • feel more energised throughout the day

Fuel around your training

Protein before and after training is like giving your muscles a head start and a soft landing. 

A proteinrich meal or snack: 

  • Before training helps reduce muscle breakdown and gives your body the amino acids it needs to start repairing as soon as you finish.
  • After training helps reduce soreness, speed up recovery, support strength gains and rebuild muscle tissue.  

This timing helps you bounce back faster and get more out of your sessions. 

Where a shake fits  

Whole foods should always be the foundation, but there are times when getting enough protein between meals is genuinely hard, and that’s where protein shakes or bars can make life easier. 

They’re especially helpful when: 

  • you train early and don’t feel like eating a full meal
  • you’re heading straight from a workout into a busy day
  • your appetite dips after training
  • you need something light before bed
  • you’re simply struggling to spread your protein evenly across the day 

Shakes aren’t about “adding more protein for the sake of it.” They’re about making it easier to stay consistent — especially when your schedule, appetite, or routine makes wholefood meals tricky. They fill the gaps, so your body stays supported, even on your busiest days. 

The overnight opportunity 

Sleep is your longest stretch without food, yet recovery keeps ticking over. A slower-digesting protein before bed, around 30–40 g, can lift overnight muscle protein synthesis and support the adaptations you earn in training. It’s a gentle way to support your body while you rest. 

The small shift that changes everything 

Protein timing isn’t about perfection or eating on a strict schedule — it’s about giving your body steady support throughout the day so you can feel and perform at your best. When you spread your protein across meals, fuel around your training, and use quick options like shakes when life gets busy, you create an environment where your body can actually recover, rebuild, and get stronger. 

It’s the small, consistent habits that make the biggest difference.
